Every horse should have a routine dental check at least once a year

Whether it’s a child’s Shetland pony or a Grand Prix Dressage champion every horse requires regular routine dental check-ups. At The Equine Dental Surgery we can tailor our service to you and your horse’s specific needs.

A routine dental check is not just rasping sharp points, it should also incorporate a thorough oral examination using a bright light source, mirrors and picks. Horses are very good at hiding dental problems and pain until they advance to the point of causing major problems. A thorough examination enables us to detect any problems early and make proactive steps to prevent further problems in the future.

Here at The Equine Dental Surgery, we predominantly use motorised equipment for the reduction of sharp points and overgrowths. In skilled hands motorised equipment is far superior to hand rasping alone and much kinder on the soft tissues of the mouth.

To facilitate a thorough examination and a safe calm environment for all, we routinely give a light sedation even for routine dental checks. This sedation lasts for 30-40 minutes and in most cases they can be turned out 1 hour later. This light sedation is given at no extra cost.
